It was a privilege to be invited to speak at the Rome Roundtable of the Global Foundation, held in the Casina Pio of the Pontifical Academy of Sciences in the Vatican this last weekend. A group of business people, financiers, journalists, inter-faith representatives, physicians, and campaigners met to discuss how we can work together for the common good in an inter-connected world. Challenging discussions on human trafficking, climate change, mining, ethical investment, and international infrastructure were had, in a fraternal and constructive atmosphere. We were addressed by, amongst others, HE Mr Ignazio Visco, Governor of the Bank of Italy, Dr Lebin Wu, Chairman of the Board of Directors, Chinese Academy of Sciences Holdings, and His Eminence Cardinal Pietro Parolin, Secretary of State of the Holy See.
I was privileged to be asked to conclude the meeting with my experiences of what happens what co-operation and seeking the common good fails, my experiences in my home country of Burundi. I was touched by the way in manner in which my remarks were heard, and the response of the meeting's participants to renew their commitment to work for a fair and just world.
