It was a privilege to host a delegation of ten Ghanaian Anglicans from the Diocese of Accra here at the Centre recently. They were led by their bishop, the Right Revd Dr Daniel SM Torto. Their visit was a first for the Centre. The group wanted to be put in touch with networks that might help with Health and Education development in and from the Church. We were able to put them in touch with the office of CARITAS International in Rome, who linked them to their key contact in Ghana itself for local liaison purposes. It is hoped that perhaps the Anglican Alliance might be invited at some point to dialogue about liaison or partnership between such networks.
The Ghanaian group were also addressed at the Anglican Centre by Father Kenneth Thesing MM (Maryknoll Missioners), who was formerly their minister general, and who is now the representative of Catholic religious at the the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations Headquarters here in Rome, on the role of the Church re development and aid as it relates to food production and distribution, as the basis of health and education.
The group were given special seating at the General Papal audience and Bishop Daniel was received by the Pope and given a gift.
We look forward to more visits of this kind from two-thirds world Anglican delegations, which relate to the Church’s mission in terms of social service and the transformation of unjust structures.
