Visible Expressions of Our Shared Faith

Christians from various backgrounds take the opportunity to witness to their common faith and commitment.

Local churches share in processions of witness, for example on Good Friday.

“You are witnesses” was the international theme of the Week of Prayer for Christian Unity in 2010, arranged by a Joint Working Group of the World Council of Churches and the Roman Catholic Church.

Cathedrals have become the focus for the unity of Christians. For example, St Alban's Abbey has an ecumenical chaplaincy.

"Welcome home!’ are the words spoken to local Roman Catholics by the Dean of St Albans in 1983. Thus started a ground-breaking ecumenical chaplaincy.
Among the chaplains is a Roman Catholic priest, who celebrates Mass every Friday in the Lady Chapel, and members of the congregation are now involved at every level of the Cathedral’s ministry of welcome to others – a welcome starting with the story of Alban, who predates all Christian divisions, continued in the Benedictine tradition of hospitality, and at the heart of the Cathedral’s mission today.

Some local churches express their commitment to one another in the form of an Ecumenical Covenant, for example, in Banstead and the Epsom Downs area:
                  The Banstead Five Churches Covenant

We, the ministers and congregations of St Ann's Roman Catholic Church, the United Reformed Church of Banstead, All Saints Church of England, St Paul's Church of England, Banstead Methodist Church...
confess to our faith in Jesus Christ as Lord and Saviour according to the Scripture
and acknowledge our calling to serve him in the world…
Since we recognise in one another the faith in one Gospel of Jesus Christ proclaimed in Scripture,
and in the Apostles’ and Nicene Creeds;
and since we recognise one another as within the one Body of Jesus Christ,
pledged to serve his kingdom, and sharing the unit of the Spirit.
We therefore covenant together to make visible the unity of Christ’s people in our neighbourhood....
