The Archbishop of Canterbury visits Pope Francis
The Director of the Anglican Centre in Rome, Archbishop David Moxon, accompanied Archbishop Justin on his first visit to Pope Francis, and here gives his impression of the day:
“
'We need to walk together.' These were the words of Pope Francis at a lunch he gave for the new Archbishop of Canterbury Justin Welby in the Vatican on Friday. The Pope had given Archbishop Justin his own seat at the table, where we were gathered in the common dining room he shares with many others each day, no longer in the Apostolic Palace. Both the Pope and the Archbishop are saying that we are called to speak and act together where we can and when we must , in the name of God’s passion for the poor, for justice, and for the transforming grace of the Gospel in the World. The lunch was the culmination of a very moving and very positive first meeting, designed to establish their relationship and to build a basis for common understandings and common action. I was witness to the beginning of a genuine friendship and a great mutual respect. The work and potential of the Anglican Centre in Rome and of ARCIC II were clearly valued and warmly noted by both the Archbishop and the Pope. A new chapter of shared faith , hope and love between our two communions has just been opened. “
