The Director and Staff

Director DJM

The Most Reverend David Moxon is the Archbishop of Canterbury’s Representative to the Holy See and Director of the Anglican Centre in Rome.

David was raised in the parish of All Saints’, Palmerston North, in the North Island of Aotearoa New Zealand during the 1950s and 1960s. His parents and upbringing were Anglican through and through as were both sets of grandparents. He was a choirboy, altar server, parish scout, and Bible class member until he was 18. Then he was selected to go to Fiji with Volunteer Service Abroad charged with the task of helping to introduce the Duke of Edinburgh Award scheme.

During his university years from 1971 to 1978, David studied in the social sciences, especially educational psychology and sociology and then read theology at Oxford. He was ordained to the diaconate in 1978 and the priesthood in 1979. He served in several parishes until 1981 when he became Director of Theological Education by Extension for the South Pacific region. He was ordained as a bishop in 1993; and in 1995, on behalf of all the churches of his nation, enjoyed the adventure of joining a New Zealand Naval vessel which was deployed to Mururoa Island, as a peaceful protest against the detonation of nuclear bombs there.

Installed as an archbishop in 2006 he was made a primate of the Anglican Church in Aotearoa, New Zealand and Polynesia in 2008.

David is married with four children who have left home: they share a Maori - European bicultural life. His hobbies include playing the flute, hiking, reading, and family time.

Archbishop David says:
“For all of my life I have had a great interest in Anglican Roman Catholic friendship and cooperation and my appointment in Rome means a great deal to me personally.”
