Santos in universa ecclesia

I had the great privilege of being seated near Pope Francis and Pope Benedict as the canonisation of two of their predecessors Pope John XXIII and Pope John Paul II took place in a city filled with over  a million people who had gathered for this moment. There was  great sense of the way these two sainted successors of Peter will continue to inspire and encourage the Church through their prayers and their example. John XXIII through the gifts of humility and love, John Paul II through the gifts of courage and endurance. These are gifts we can all be reminded of as the Christian world thinks about the life and work of these two saints of God.

For the honour of the blessed trinity, the exaltation of the Catholic faith and the increase of the Christian life, by the authority of our Lord Jesus Christ and of the holy Apostles Peter and Paul and our own. After due deliberation and frequent prayer for divine assistance, and having sought the counsel of many of our brother bishops, we declare and define blessed John XXII and John Paul II be saints and we enrol them among the saints decreeing that they are to be venerated as such by the whole Church, in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.
